America was built by people willing to take risks. Every business that opened its doors, every community that rebuilt after a disaster, and every breakthrough that moved from idea to reality required someone willing to step forward into the unknown. Insurance may not always be visible, but it gives people and businesses the confidence to take and manage risks, recover from setbacks, and keep building.
As America marks 250 years of progress, Brown & Brown is proud to support Insuring America: 250 Years of Insurance History by Business Insurance and help recognize the insurance industry’s role in the U.S. story. We are proud to play a small part in that work, and we do not take that responsibility lightly. For us, that story continues every day as we help customers navigate risk in a changing world.
Watch the five episodes, which include comments from Brown & Brown Chairman J. Hyatt Brown, here.
Growing alongside America
Brown & Brown began in 1939 as a local, two-partner insurance agency in Daytona Beach, Florida. As we’ve expanded across the country and around the world, we’ve continued to believe that we have a responsibility to support our customers, and the people and places that help our team and business thrive.
The risks facing customers today look very different from the risks facing businesses in 1939, let alone 1776! American industry expanded. Companies grew more specialized. Travel became global, supply chains stretched across borders, and many once-unthinkable challenges emerged. Through each era of change, Brown & Brown evolved to meet these new obstacles head-on.
That’s one of the keys to being a “Forever Company” and something I value deeply about Brown & Brown. We adapt without losing who we are. We develop new capabilities, welcome new teammates, enter new markets, and serve new customer needs. At the same time, we stay grounded in the fundamental principles that have guided us for decades: honesty, integrity, discipline, and an unwavering focus on the customer.
That ability to evolve depends on staying close to the people and businesses we serve. Risks may shift over time, but understanding them starts in the places where our customers live and work.
Understanding risk at the local level from coast to coast
Insurance is a global business, but it’s also deeply local. That’s why relationships matter, and why we stay close to our customers. Customers need experienced advisors who understand their business and their daily challenges. Insurance carriers need to clearly and accurately understand the risks. We help bring those perspectives together to help customers make informed decisions and move forward with confidence.
Brown & Brown teammates help support the industries and institutions people rely on every day, from healthcare and higher education to transportation, logistics, entertainment, live events, and professional services, coast to coast.
You can see that work come to life every day across American life. Here are a few examples:
In New York City, we help insure more than half of the shows currently on Broadway, as well as 46 of the largest performing arts venues in the U.S. Across the country in Pasadena, California, Brown & Brown has helped protect the Rose Parade since 2001, as well as the Rose Bowl itself.
But our role in American life extends far beyond those highly visible moments. Brown & Brown teammates support customers across nearly every corner of the economy, from schools and hospitals to farms and factories, from disaster recovery and construction projects to cyber threats, health plans, and the everyday risks that shape how people live and work.
Helping customers manage uncertainty takes people with a deeply rooted commitment to serving customers well through every stage of change.
Growing through people, culture, and trust
Our 2025 acquisition of Accession, including Risk Strategies and One80 Intermediaries, was the largest in our company’s history. It significantly expanded our capabilities and welcomed thousands of new teammates to Brown & Brown.
We’ve grown organically and through acquisitions over the years, but we have never viewed growth as just a numbers exercise. We look for firms that fit culturally, share a commitment to customers, and expand or enhance our existing capabilities. We ask whether an individual or business shares our values and whether, together, we can create better outcomes.
Because our growth is grounded in cultural alignment and a commitment to customers, we refer to our people as teammates, not employees. We believe people should have the opportunity to grow through performance, dedication, and the value they help create for customers, teammates, and shareholders. That ownership mindset is one of the things that sets this company apart.
If we’re going to build something that lasts, the people building it should be part of its success. That mindset is one reason we are built for the long term.
Focusing on America’s future
The next 250 years will bring risks we can already see and many we can’t. Existing industries will transform. New technologies will reshape how businesses operate, how people work, and how communities prosper. And customers will need a broker who can help them understand what is changing, prepare for what may come next, and stay grounded in practical solutions.
We are proud of what Brown & Brown has become, but we are even more focused on what comes next. Our job is to stay close to our customers, invest in our teammates, and help individuals and businesses protect what they have built so they can keep moving forward. Trust is earned every day, and we intend to keep earning it for the next 250 years.
